Travis Roy
1990-2005

Travis was the star of the 2001 FACTS Concert. As he sang "A Whole New World" and "Beauty & The Beast" with his tutor, Julie, the audience knew this was a performance they would never forget. More than a hundred people jumped to their feet to applaud a special boy with autism who found his voice. Travis was remembered by many as the boy who sang the Aladdin song, but to his family and friends, he was so much more. His love of planes, trains and Disney showcased his vast memory skills and artistic talents.  Travis was enjoying success in middle school then on May 20th 2005, he collapsed at school.  Travis had a sudden cardiac arrest due to an undiagnosed heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. After weeks in intensive care, Travis spent his last week at home in his room. He passed away peacefully on June 25, 2005. Travis had the unwavering dedication of his parents, Diana and Bob, and brother, Justin.

Travis continues to be a source of inspiration for those who knew and loved him. His father, Bob, has initiated a campaign to encourage legislation which would require ALL schools in California to have a defibrillator on campus, as the use of such a device would have dramatically increased Travis' chance of survival. The first steps of this important campaign began in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District and resulted in a school board decision to provide these life-saving devices in their middle and high schools, and the provision of donations for additional defibrillators. You can help this family save lives by asking your school district to have a defibrillator available at your neighborhood schools. We have a chance to honor Travis' memory by taking action, just as his family has.

Update: On August 30th 2006, the California Senate unanimously approved ACR-159 creating a state-wide Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Day in California.  September 12th (Travis’ birthday) has been set aside to honor SCA victims like Travis as well as those that have survived survived through the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  and to provide an opportunity for future awareness opportunities for the general public.  This resolution was sponsored by Assemblyman Ray Haynes and is an important step in increasing awareness and saving lives!  Since then, The Travis R. Roy Sudden Cardiac Arrest Fund 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation was established to raise awareness so others may survive! Congratulations to the Roy Family on this significant acheivement!
